Magic! Romance! Funny banter! This book has it all. I love a good fairy tale, and Diana Wynne-Jones is one of the best at writing that kind of whimsical magic into her stories.

I read the book before seeing the Studio Ghibli adaptation, so I was a bit surprised by how different the movie is from its source material. In the book, Sophie and Howl bicker constantly; there's a heavy emphasis on Howl's vanity, and the Witch of the Waste is a spurned lover of his. In fact, he has a reputation for breaking hearts everywhere he goes. Plus, he's from our world! Native to Wales. In the movie, Howl is much more noble, and Sophie much more demure. The feeling is entirely different, but honestly, I enjoy both stories!
