26.Feb.26 - In Which I Begin Building This Website

My first ever blog entry on my own website! How exciting. But now that I'm writing it, I'm not sure what to say.

I guess I'll start by explaining what I'm doing here.

In the mornings, after the rush to get my daughters up and dressed and fed and onto their respective school buses, my house goes (relatively) quiet. The sun has just started to rise. My husband is still asleep, as his work starts in the afternoon and goes into the evening. It's just me, the cat, and our son, who's far too young for school. I scoop kibble for the cat, put the baby in his play pen, and start to brew myself some coffee. While the water heats, I open my laptop on the counter and search for a YouTube video to keep me company.

This morning, that video is one by onionboots about the web revival.

I turn 30 next month, so I'm just old enough to remember the era of personal websites. I used HTML to personalize my Neopets page as a little girl, but by the time I started middle school, everyone was on Facebook. The reign of the social media giants had begun.

Still, I love the idea of an old-school network of independent sites all linking back to one another. And I love the challenge of figuring out how to put a working site together without any programming knowledge. Most of all, I love the passion found in onionboots's video. It inspired me to start a website of my own today!

So here I am, using a template I found on a site linked in an old Reddit thread, putting together my own little slice of the Internet. I enjoy writing, so I'll likely use this space to blog about whatever is on my mind day-to-day. I'll also learn ways to improve my site and work to make it a nicer place to be. Of course, this will all happen in what precious little time I have to myself, so the going will be slow. Luckily, there's no rush here!
